    What Is A Chromecast?

You may have seen reports or read articles about a recently released device from Google. The Chromecast is a digital media streaming adapter that hooks to the back of a high definition television. The device, which looks a lot like a thumb drive, plugs into an HDMI port on a television. It is then plugged into a USB adapter on the side of the TV which powers the device.
The Chromecast does require some extra work and tech savvy to get it up and running. The first step is to switch the television to the input being used by the Chromecast. The dongle then needs to locate the home wifi network. To do this, the home user is going to need a smart phone, tablet, or computer.
This device is great in a connected house, but if you do not have a smart phone, computer, or tablet, this may not be the best streaming solution. The Chromecast has an application that can be downloaded virtually anywhere. The Chromecast will then give the user step by step instructions on the screen to set it up.
Once the set up is complete, content is then pushed from a smart phone, tablet, or laptop to the screen. It is compatible with Netflix, YouTube, Google Play, Hulu, and Pandora. Other applications, such HBO Go will be adding applications soon for streaming. This device works very well for a Netflix subscriber or anyone procient with using Google Play services such as Music, Movies, or Photos. In its early stages, it is still missing content providers and may feel limited verses a Roku or an Apple TV which has more channels.
The Chromecast has great potential to change the course of entertainment. Retailing for 35 dollars makes it an inexpensive entertainment solution. Many who have ‘cut the cord’ from their cable provider may find value in using the Chromecast. Some who have tech savvy kids could benefit as well.
We’ll see if this device withstands the test of time, but if you have purchased one of these devices and have any questions or need help with installation, give OK Electronics a call and we may be able to assist. We can help with a variety of installation options best suited for your needs.
